Father’s Day Gift Guide

Fathers Day Gifts One//Two//Three//Four//Five//Six//Seven//Eight

What type of father’s day gift do you have in mind this year? I always pick a gift based on the mood my dad is in lately.  My own father is an Renaissance southern hipster sportsman friendly but will cuss you out type of guy.  He has a colorful way with words and truly doesn’t care what anyone else thinks he should do. I live to hear him cuss and tell an inappropriate joke. He has always given me anything that I needed and almost anything I wanted.

This one time when I was a freshman in high school. I had to have a Caboodle for drama class and the Walmart was completely out the night before I needed it for class. And everything was closing at 6PM in our small town. I was upset that I would not have what I needed for class. And I hated to be called out for not having my supplies. So at 4AM, the next morning my dad and I went back to the Wally World.  And when we got to the beauty aisle and it was closed for cleaning. My dad said whatever and crossed the yellow caution tape and opened a freight box and grabbed the first Caboodle he saw. It just so happened to be a purple with specs of glitter all over it.  He then said lets go and we rushed to the register.  In my 13 year-old mind, I thought this move was real gangster. As I’ve gotten, older  I appreciate his boldness and unapologetic ways. He saw the importance of me having a makeup case and was just as excited when I was like that’s the one I wanted.

Do you have any colorful stories about the dad in your life? Does your dad use swear words? Does your dad tell a story like no one else?

  • The Hipster – He likes jazz and understands the new trends. And may have artistic talents such as building model airplanes and boats.
  • The Rockstar – His record collection is mint condition and his concert t-shirts are real and not a reproduction.
  • The Techie –  He is the type of guy who has all the gadgets similar to Iron Man’s setup. He has google glasses, Apple and Android watch and on the wait list for the unmanned car.
  • The Photographer – This dad has a setup that most professionals would dream of having. He always has cameras for all the important events like graduation or road trip.
  • The Sportsman – He likes the great outdoors and has a camper for just him and his hunting buddies.
  • The Grill King – Watch out this dad doesn’t let anyone in on the secret sauce. He is the king of the grill and no one would dare challenge him on it.
  • The Old School – Doesn’t like anything new and believes that quality is a thing of the past. He prefers vintage in mint condition items. Those Ray-Ban’s are from when he was in his 20’s. And no you can’t have them because the trend is back.

There are no words to describe my love for my Mama There are no words to describe my love for my Mama fully. She was my biggest fan, my greatest supporter, and the one who helped me navigate life through its many ups and downs. She prayed for me, encouraged me, and always believed in me, even when I doubted myself.

I owe her my life's work and every accolade I've achieved. She saw me through undergrad, guided me as I navigated Corporate America—even though she had never experienced it herself—and kept me grounded through it all.

She prayed with me in moments of joy and in times of need. She stood proudly by my side on my wedding day and cried with me through some of the most challenging moments of my life.

My mom saved my life in more ways than I can count. Her love and guidance shaped the person I am today, and her passing has forever changed me.

On November 26, 2024, Esther Gleaton went home to be with her ancestors. I find comfort in knowing she is finally at rest, free from pain, and in eternal peace.

My mother bravely faced a short but aggressive battle with Plasma Cell Leukemia, spending 72 days fighting inpatient at the Northside Hospital Cancer Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. She fought with courage, grace, and incredible strength.

In sickness and health, my father, Orbie Gleaton, was by her side daily. He saw her through the very dark days and celebrated the joyful moments with her.

His love and devotion to my mom never wavered—he never left her side. The love they shared is eternal and serves as a beautiful testament to the bond they built together.

Mama, your love will guide me forever. You are my heart, and I will carry you with me always.

There will be days in this life when you feel alone, but know that the ancestors are with you. When you go for that job interview remember that you are carrying the ancestors with you. Everyone who has ever cared for and prayed for you goes with you when you are alone. Some of those people will never get to have your experiences or go in those boardrooms, but you carry them with you. You are the manifestation of an impossible dream - through middle passage, slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, segregation, civil rights - they believed that it was possible.
